Default torque box question

I might as well throw in some front torque boxes with the sub frame connectors. My 66 coupe has good floors, firewall, and inner rockers. The torque boxes I'm seeing appear to be a 2-piece design welded together into a triangular box. If the car's sub structure is fine, wouldn't I only need the outer torque box, not the complete 2-piece torque box? Am I missing something, is the inner portion necessary to seat against the bottom of the floor pan? Where can I get the 2-piece unassembled boxes? I've heard the 2-piece units are easier to install rather than a complete box.

Glazier/Nolan uses and sells the 2-piece box.

Sounds like you might be able to buy the 2 piece and just use the bottom half. Then maybe you can pass on the upper piece to somebody who needs it.

I don't know for sure, I was just saying maybe, I'm not sure how the pieces are separated either.

I think I may have asked before. How hard is it to install torque boxes on a completed car? I might want to add them to my 65.

You have to use both pieces, the floor panel is not heavy enough to provide the necessary strength. If you're going to cut corners don't even bother installing them. You have to create a rigid box to transfer the load from the subframe to the rocker.

Installation is easy, you will have to remove the fender. You'll just need to lift the carpet so you don't burn it. If you go with the 2 piece box you can weld in the upper piece along the floor first then put the outer part of th box in. If you go with a single piece box you need to cut slots in the floor to weld in the upper portion of the box. At least on my car the box required a little persuasion to fit in. Don't skimp on the gusset plate either, weld it in.

Here are some pics of one done with the floor cut out http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/h...0torque%20box/

Thanks for the photobucket link, in it you mentioned that the dynacorn box had to be modified and that one flange was wrong and you flattened it out etc... can you elaborate on that?

Not my pics but they are what I used when I was looking to add these. I think I did have to cut the my box on install, there was a lip that would normally go through the floor at the pillar, this is used in a one piece box since there is no access to weld to the bottom. On the 2 piece box you can weld everything from the bottom. I also drilled a couple of holes in the floor to add a few spot welds in. The newer boxes also have the holes already cut in for the cables.
