Timing Trouble
Hey, I have a 1965 Mustang with a 289 small block, and I am having some timing problems. I put a new Edelbrock top end in it and it ran fine with the old distributor. Then I put a new MSD distributor in it, in the same position and I am having problems. It idles fine and it runs good when you are beating on it, but when you ease into it, it starts to miss or backfire. A good example is when I put it into second gear and try to ease into it, it misses and backfires. I've tried putting the distributor into many positions, and I still cant figure it out. If someone could give me some pointers, it would be much appreciated.
i'd say as well without a timing gun you probably will get nowhere.
could you borrow one somewhere? Best are those where you can dial in an advance with **** at the back or buttons (digital)
and what exact distributor did you put in?
if it backfires. through the exahaust or back through the carb?
try with disconnecting and plugging the vacuum advance (plug the carb side)

what is your timing set at? Is it advancing?
I think it is advancing too fast actually, but i have the heavy springs in the distributor already. And Im not exactly sure on where the timing is setand

I put a MSD Pro-Billet distributor in it. Im pretty sure it is backfiring out the pipes but it only happens when Im going easy on the car or just cruising around. When Im beating on it, it seems to run fine.
