Default engine running hot.

hmmmm.... today i took my 289 67 fastback out for a drive for about 5-6 mintues just on some city streets, only goin like 25-30 mph at most, and for some reason it is overheating bad. i opened the hood and it was smoking out the cylinder heads, the radiator and the whole general engine. does it have something to do with me running it on water in the radiator. i put some in before i drove cuz it was low. ps, my transmission was actin' funny too, it lagged between shiffting into 2nd gear, could that have sumthin to do with the overheating as well? thnx.

Sounds like you are in dire need of a flush, or your bottom hose is sucking closed because it don't have a spring in it.

While the engine is cold, take the thermostat out (then replace the thermostat housing) and take the radiator cap off and turn on the engine. With a garden hose, keep putting water in the radiator until it overflows. Keep doing that until the radiator will not take any more water. Then, put the cap back on and see if it overheats. If it does not, then you need to replace the thermostat. If it does, then you have other issues such as a plugged radiator or a water pump that has gone south. Let's just hope you don't have a blown head gasket or a cracked block.
