Some sentence that is :-)

however I'd nearly say a PCV would operate without a breather. haven't tried it, but as far as I know it only opens when there is pressure in crankcase causing the intake to pull it out. no pressure->no operation. there should never be a vacuum in the crank case. and if there is no pressure in the crank case the PCV should not open for the intake to pull. otherwise you don't have a PCV but a massive vacuum leak

Some of the old school drag guys ran a vacuum pump for the crank case to keep it under vacuum. I'm still researching this whole deal, I would like to run pcv without a breather, still not sure if its possible or not.

I had the same problem on my 1967, I tried a couple of different brands, some worse then others. Got a Motorcraft PCV for a 1994 5.0 and the noise is gone. It is plastic and has a 90 Degree adaptor that pops off you if just want the fitting that faces up.

A PCV definatly needs a breather to let in fresh air. A PCV is more of a controlled vacuum leak, not massive.
If your breather has a tube connected to the air cleaner, it's considered a "closed system" because even if bad gasses back up into the air cleaner, they get sucked down the carb. It does work with just a filtered breather cap though (if the filter is not clogged).
It's a great system if it's setup right (with a breather) and it doesn't affect performance.
A detailed overview of how the PCV works and it's history is at:
