I have a 68 mustang with a 302 (came with 289). It has sat up since 2004. I did start it now and then and tried to drive it around the neighborhood some. The motor is making a knocking sometimes. Its only after it has ran for awhile not when you first crank it. It was smoking pretty bad for awhile but the last time I started it, it didn't at all. The sound isn't a tapping but more of a knock. I was told it may be the oil pump screen is gunked up. I did keep fuel stable in it. I don't know where to start. The oil gage is isn't giving a reading. I don't know if its not working or the pump went out.
