Default '66 GT is it worth it?

Almost to the point of buying a 66 GT. Numbers matching. 289 4v. 3sp. True PIO on the fender plate. A few questions:

It has a red vinyl top that matches the red body color. Was this a factory option? Not crazy about it, but it is in perfect condition as is most of the car.

It is a coupe so I know it is not as sought after, but I like the look of the coupes.

It has been redone. Real good interior. New bushings, seals, etc.

Can get it for $16,900? Is it worth it?

Also, can someone provide a short list of performance upgrades that I can do to the engine without swapping it out. Would like to keep the original and just add to it. Maybe most bang for the buck without breaking the bank. Thanks. - I love reading the stuff that you guys post.

If it's a real, restored A code GT, properly done, it's worth it; if it's shiny paint over shoddy work, no.

It is a real A code. The work looks very good. Underside has been refreshed well, paint is very good and interior is almost new looking. I found where the vinyl top was a $74 option in '66. How can I find out how many GT coupes had this option?

It is a 3sp. How is the conversion to a 4 or 5? Tremec vs T5.

I just don't see it.
A coupe at that price in this market is overpriced couple that with the fact that you obviously don't want an all stock or concourse style car and want to immediately start making changes/updates it is overpriced.

Go here
http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Cars-Tru...=p4506.c0.m301

Add 10 coupes of similar style to your watch list.
Come back 7 days later.
9 of the 10 will not have sold because the reserve prices are too high/by it now too high.
(PS this is the only way I know to search ended auctions and it also will show you when they relist at the same price over and over and over....)

Wow, are you sure it is a true Gt? I have never seen a GT with a 3speed. This car is not a steal at that price unless it was a nearly perfect show car. If you have to do anything to it the money starts adding up quick!

well a fastback will go for that price, for a coupe (i'm just guessing because you say vinyl top) I'd say it's steep.
But ya as the others have said, if in perfect condition, ok. but what's the point of that when you are already eyballing a 5speed gearbox

"True PIO on the fender plate"

What does that mean?

If it has been judged and won in a concours category a a mustang show then yes it is worth that much but only if it has won!!!

If it has won then you would be a fool of the highest order to mod anything on this car.

From what you have said you want i would suggest looking for something in nice driver in the 6-8K range. You should be able to find something that isnt a major project and that you can drive and mod to what you want.
