Default versailes 9" questions

what is a "versailes" 9" rear end, obviously its a 9" rear end but what is the advantage of it? i noticed its used quite a bit, is it possible it would fit in a 66 coupe? is it out of a lincoln or some other land yacht of the 70s? i already blew the spider gears out of my 8" once and luckily scored another third member for $100, but i dont know how long this one is going to last, that and im tired of having a one wheel wonder, im more than likely going to buy a moser 3rd member with 3:50 gears and a tru track, but just wanted to get some facts before i dive in

The versailes has disk brakes in the rear. If you put disks on any 9 inch set up you have the same thing. A custom made 9 inch is the only way you can get a 9 inch for a 66. If you had a 67-70 a 9 inch from a 57-59 big ford will bolt right in, Those are getting tough to find. 67-70 also came with 9 inch (some) If you want a 9 inch in a mustang 65-66 it's going to be a custom built one. Up to about 1500 HP the 8.8 is just as good as the 9 inch.

The versailies 9 inch is kinda a mutt you can't put any other brakes on it.I would rather just order a housing and axles you know its all new and will fit perfect not close enough.I have a currie 9 in mine 35 spline its taken 2 seasons of bracket drag racing with 600 foot pounds plus the spray.

The po claims this to be a Versallies rear but measuring it out tells me either it's not or it was cut since it measures in at 57.25" not the 58.5" of the versallies. It did have the original disk brakes on it (since upgraded) and it does have a trak-loc 3rd member but no tags of any sort.

Andrew
Can't is a mighty big word.
I knew a guy that put a Allison 12 cylinder in a dodge dart.
I put a 460 in a Mustang ll. We landed men on the moon in the 60s.
I remember when "experts" said we can't run a quarter mile any faster than 8 seconds. Now they are in the 3s at 330 mph.
Can't put any other brakes on the rear end, Yea right

I don't think that is entirely true. I have SSBC rear disc on my Versailles in my 68 Fastback. granted I don't know if they changed the ends or not...but I have em on there

There are a few benefits to this 9 inch
1. It used to be the way to get rear disc....not needed anymore.
2. The housing has additional ribbing so it is 'stronger' than say a 57 Ford housing
3. It is a slightly wider than a stock 65 housing but close enough that the same offsets work.
4. When you put it in the 67/8 it is narrower than the stock housing, so you can run rims with much deeper 'dish' to them (which is what I like)
5. Since they came out of heavy lincolns they also tend (if complete) to have lower rear gear and trak locks in stock form

I have a Versailles rear in my 65. Its just ever so slightly wider. I'm running 3.50 traction lock in mine with a T5 and think its just about perfect.

The Lincoln Versailles was made from 77-80. GVM means Granada, Versailles, Monarch.

All the Versailles gear ratios were lousy. Some were 2.73 but could have been as bad as 2.52 or something like that.

I stand corrected. I thought they were all 3.25 or 3.5s (maybe its just most of the ones I've ever looked at where already mod)

I'm fairly certain that they were all like this and have never seen or heard of one with good gears. The best avialable ratio was 3.0:1. Here is some more Versailles tech.

you can install many systems on the versailles, I have installed cobra rear discs on mine, mustang steve, currie and a few others have the kit to do it.
