C4 tranny fluid question
So i work at a local stealership and can get fluids for discount, my question is could i use say atf from toyota, or chevy? for my 67 stang tranny is a '65
Type F is a limited slip fluid. It has a lower lubrication factor than any other ATF. Other ATFs will let the C4 frictions slip - burning them up.
The only time you should use anything other than type F in a C4 is if you are using cabon or Kevlar friction materials and then you should run Mercon V ( or other full synthetic oil rated for transmissions. You should NEVER use motor oil in a C4.

It is a "paper-like material" but trust me - it isn't reaaly paper.
As fas as needing a different fluid all the rebuild parts that are put into rebuild kits is stock linings. Alto red and blue are also "paper-like material" and work best with type F ATF. Only when you use Kevlar and carbon friction material throughout the transmission should you consider using anything else - and then it should be Mercon V or other full synthetic fluid made to meet the specs of the parts. Kevlar and carbon friction material should not be used on the street because of the heat it generates as it slips - it gets hot enough to toast type F fluid under hard usage.
(type F has a higher heat tolerance than Dexron)
