Has anyone installed one at a reasonable cost?

Being a 71 just get a din bezel like http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...dio_bezels.htm then pick out a nice din size radio. For speakers you can get kick panels made for them and if it has a fold down back seat npd has a trap door with 6x9 pods made in to it.

Depends on how you define "nice". Driving the wife and kids to Dairy Queen nice, or impressing the high school kids at cruise night nice.

Enough sound deadening you can hear it over the exhaust even at wot.

I installed a Retrosound, not for sound quality, but for a bit of nostalgia in my 65 with Pioneers in the rear deck and a dual voice coil in the dash. It's "OK" on sound but with the insulation I added and Magnaflows, I've never used the radio in 600 miles. If you want great sound with headroom, avoid this. If you want respectable sound, it's a decent option.

ya, sound deadener helps. with the retrosound I find them a great device, but it always cuts off the first second of a song. takes 2 or 3 secs to actually find the beat when listening.

A nice exhaust would suffice... Haha
I doubt I'll put in a sound system. Not at first at least.

Mostly these cars had the sound deadener torn out by some HS lid back in the 70's. With all of the OEM deadener in place, they are actually quite quiet inside, but most people have neaver been in one with the deadener. It's all available new, die, cut, and not even expensive.

I replaced the lower shift boot in my 66, missing for decades, and I was surprised how much quieter it was.
