I think the discussion centers on electric v. thermo clutch, not electric v. fixed 4 blade. A thermo clutch fan would freewheel just like your electric one did on that 80 mile jaunt.

I realize the confusion I was reading mechanical fan as a fixed fan just like the classics had. The clutch or thermo activated fans are also mechanical and I did not clearly make that distinction in my post I also read mechanical as "fixed classic style" so I'm not at all surprised your truck came with a clutch or thermo activated type mechanical fan...I would be surprised if it came with a fixed type mechanical fan.

If you're running either a clutch type mechanical or electric fan and it is working for you then go about your business because you have already made a decent upgrade over the fixed stock fan.

Which of the two is better? electric or clutch type mech. That's almost certainly based on personal preference with the exception of Iskwezmwho for some reason had better results with the electric setup. That's the only time I remember reading about one not working for someone.
