I'm really just yanking your chain, you know, back then Ford engines were red, too.

Engine Update: As you can see from the photos, the heads, timing cover, oil pan are on...

If you look hard at one photo, you will see a Chevy ORANGE 396 Big Block in the back ground... Is that a different color????

Once I got the engine back to the car, I had to put on of the Powder Coated Valve Covers on to see what its going to look like...

Hopefully I get some time the weekend to get started on putting it back into the car.

Pretty awesome that you and your son are working together on this. I still treasure the days I spent with my dad in the garage building cabinets. It was a great time!

On another note. That looks more like International Harvester Red. (just kidding around).
Personally, I need a brighter color (like red or blue) to help my blind eyes see leaks, loose bolts, etc. I was never a fan of the black long blocks.
I'll look forward to seeing that beautiful ruby all finished out inside the engine bay.
With the black and red of the engine, will you keep the stock black "camera" finish on the gauge bezel, glove box, and console?
A nice theme to keep throughout the whole car.

I have ran into several issues that have really slowed me down... First and foremost was a damaged Transmission Yoke... Basically, I had a bad U Joint. When I removed the old ones. The yoke was severely damaged...

Learned they no longer make them. Tried to find a used one, which were more damaged than the one I had. So I broke out my welder. Welded it up and used my dremel to grind it down... I was really impressed with my work... But didnt take photos...

Then came the U Joints... What a pain. I ordered the ones with Zirc fitting so I can greese them ... Got the rear installed no problem. Installing the front was a bear. But finally go it done... When I installed the zirc.. it broke off in the U Joint... Then I used my easy out to get the broken zirc out... Then the easy out broke off in the zirc...

Order New U Joint...Finally got that done.

Installed the Flex Plate, Fly Wheel and Torque Converter. Ran into an issue on the Motor Mounts... which was a pain... I ordered new ones, but got two left sides,,, That was another pain...

Installed the Tranny... Which was a bear... Did it by myself. My son is at with a buddy of his for a few days...

If you look just between the no. 3 and 4 cylinder... I am missing a Water Plug... So I couldnt install starter... Tried to track down a plug on a Saturday afternoon... Couldnt find it... 1 step forward,,, two steps back...

Getting Closer...

Why did you install the torque converter to the engine first? How are you going to make sure it is properly seated? I've never seen anyone do it that way before ...

Great progress. You sure have a nice shop to work in!
I agree with Texas Axman. You definitely want to feel the two distinctive "clunks" of the torque converter properly inserting into the transmission pump. Otherwise it will be a short first start up.
On your mounts, if you haven't already installed the engine, here is a quick tip.
The '65 style rubber isolation mounts have no protection from devulcanization, like they do on '66 and up vehicles. So I through bolt them, using flat head allens and steel lock nuts. It's an old racer's trick. Don't preload the bolts, just snug them down. Also make sure to use the heat shields (can be purchased through a good Mustang repro parts vendor).
Here's a link to some pictures of modifying the mounts:

Thanks for your input...

With regard to the Torque converter questions... This is an automatic C4...

I did some research.. It appears that I will be tearing it apart and putting it back together again...

I was just reassembling it the way it came apart...

ALso, this is not my shop... It belows to a Boat mechanic friend of mine...

Mustangs and Mastercrafts go together like Hotdogs and hamburgers. Hard not to smile when around either one.
Great friend!
Nice that Texas AxMan caught that. Just saved you a ton of trouble and mess.
There's a lot of good people on this forum!
Stay with it, I'm looking forward to hearing it run!

Sorry it has taken me so long to update this... Life Happens

Anyway as you can see we have made alot of progress... Got held up on alot of little stuff... Learned alot...
Like... Roller Cam engines/cams, really dont like 1965 distributors... Run, but ping like crazy... in the middle RPM Band... Had to buy the expensive MSD one... which for some reason was a pain in the ..... to install... That sucker fought me all the way... It just did not want to go into the #1 pistion slot... Took hours??? Still dont know why...

Basically everything under the hood is brand new with a few minor exceptions... Engine, Carb, Distributor, Starter, Water Pump, Alternator, Transmission, Ujoints, Resealed the rear end...

Replaced then entire exhaust system... except the Manifolds....

I went with the advice of my muffler guy... I went with the California Turbo Mufflers... It sounds exactly like I wanted...

The engine Runs Great, Looks Great, and Sounds Great.... Now its time to move on to the other items as $$$ Permits...Suspension, Brakes, Rims, Tires, Paint, Interior, Conv Top... etc.... etc... etc.... any one have a spare $10k laying around that they want to get rid of...
