First test drive and it cut off going up a hill
I took my 66 coupe 6 cylinder out for my first test drive.
Drove maybe 2 miles and stopped at the local gas station to put some extra gas in it.
It drive very well for the most part. But about 3 blocks from home I came up a little hill and the thing cut off. Started sputtering and cut off at the top of the hill. I tried turning it back over and the thing sounded like it wanted to but didn't. I waited maybe 2 minutes and then it did cut back on. I drive home without any other issues.
The other weird thing was the gas gauge showed way more gas than it actually had.
What could have caused this? Need to adjust carb (it is a pony carb 1100 that I just got)? Some sort of gas line thing? I don't know if it flooded or didnt get enough gas.

best thing is to always check when it happens. open the bonnet remove aircleaner. agitate throttle and see if it sprays. if it does, then you did not run out of fuel as the bowls were still full or at least had some.
what could have happened is that the floats are too high and you spill petrol going uphill into the carb. but then I would wonder how it started after a while again. Maybe your ignition cut out?
maybe a loose cable?
maybe dirt in the tanke/fuel line?

Yeah im kinda thinking fuel pump right now too.
You could always just try a maximum power acceleration and see if it falls on its face especially just after the 2nd gear shift from 1st. If does fall on its face do as Kaili said. Open bonnet aka hood for us American speaking people and after removing the air cleaner move the throttle to the wide open position while looking down the carb. If you dont see fuel get pissed into the carb its a safe bet its because it ran out of fuel.
Test it once before this happens so you know what it should look like.
All this done with the engine off.

When you say "first test drive" - how long was it before the first test drive? Days, months, or years? I'm thinking maybe you stirred up some sludge in your fuel tank when you filled it up. If you were just referring to the installation of your carb - then nevermind!

@crunchyskippy - It is a new tank. Actually a ton of new stuff.
I drove it up and down the drive way several times before this.
This was my first trip out onto the street.
Maybe you right tho since I have been driving level before now.
It is a new fuel pump also.
I need to look and see what the carb looks like shooting fuel (I have done this on a 4 barrel before but need to see what this one looks like). Then give it another spin.
