Default Electric fan myth

I have been reading about and considering an electric fan for my old ride for sometime now, but ran across this article. It opened my eyes. I guess unless you are running over 400 HP, the electric fan is worse than the fan already on the car.

what a coincidence soaring, i was just about to post something about this topic, since my 69 302 still heats up more then it oughta. coolingwise i've got this 3 row with a six blade flex a lite fan, but still it heats up in nearly all driving conditions, especially if you put your foot down once in a while behind a traffic light. and i do mean once in a while, not all the time...

so i wonder, since i haven't got a fan shroud, would that be the solution? or what would ADDING a e-fan to the system do? i.e, when it heats up further then it should, just switch it on as an extra cooling aid, together with the mechanical fan?

i think it would at least get me some more air flow thus somewhat more cooling, but i like to run things past you guys for safe measure first, before buying stuff all over the place

I really dont think that that is all true. I have the stock fan on my 66 without a clutch. You can just imagine all the HP it's taking to turn that fan. As far as AMP draw, i dont remember what mine said, but i dont think it was any where near 35 amps. I got duel 10's for my impala. and they was talking about a little rx-7 that has a 4 banger or if lucky a 6 banger.

Yes, a fan shroud does make a difference. Especially in stop and go traffic. You notice that all modern cars have shrouds, even with electric fans. As far as adding an electric fan along with the mechanical fan, I don't think there would be room on the engine side of the rad to put the electric in there. You could possibly put an electric in front of the rad, but that is something I have never heard of.

i have seen electric fans on front of the rad. It does the job i think, but a shroud would probably help out alot.

Well Charles, there is where the myth thing comes to bear. Just how much horsepower does it take to turn a fan? Does using a mechanical fan rob your engine more horsepower than an electric? The article says no.
On the side though, isn't it amazing that all new cars have electric fans? The advantages are that they only come on when needed, so that the highway speed is sufficient air flow without any fan. That is somewhat close to the flex fan idea too isn't it?

Well yeah, i think the fans with clutches are cool. It's a very good idea. Im sure that the fans with the clutches wouldn't use as much power as the ones without them. As said, The electric fan companies say it adds 15-17 HP, which is a very big increase. It would be something good to find out though. The fan on my 66 is a straight fan, no clutch.

Another option is swapping from your mechanical clutch fan to a mechanical flex fan. Unlike a stock mechanical fan, which uses a clutch and comes on at a prescribed temperature, many flex fans work all the time. This design not only enhances your vehicle's cooling ability, it also can improve its performance and fuel economy. As an example, Diederich says some factory light-duty truck fans require as much as 30 hp to operate, while a mechanical flex fan uses just 9 to 18 hp.
I found this on a website, if Thats true then removing the fan would give you a big HP increase.

Again, therein lies the myth. Where is the proof?

Yeah, i know. The only way is to run a car on a dyno with a mechanical fan, and then with an electric. I found a nice little website that is talking about different kinds of performance options.
you can look at it here. they say you can get up to 5 HP. So who really knows?
