Default Power Steering Fluid?

Hey guys. I have to replace my power steering hoses. One blew about a week ago and dumped the contents on the garage floor. What should I use to refill the reservoir? ATF mercron or power steering fluid. 72 mustang with a 351C if you want to know. Thanks

IDK, I use ATF all the time, seems like that is what I usually have on hand.

IMO, Type F Dextron, Mercon, etc, I don't think it makes a damn bit of difference...

Yes use Dexron, Off the self ATF, Bargain brand Imported SPECIAL Design Power Steering Fluid, see what happens.

You might get by with the lower Viscosity at the higher temps, then again you may not???

uh,,, yea....

And make sure to flush the antifreeze out of your car every spring and replace it with coolant for the summer, in the fall make sure to reverse the process....

ATF is hydraulic fluid with different friction modifiers added in, which power steering could care less about. Any ATF made for domestic vehicles is good enough for power steering for any domestic vehicle. Probably good enough for foreign makes as well, but I understand this may not be true with Hondas.

I guess type F is the right one, if someone is going to worry about it go with type F..... But I don't worry about it....

Power steering fluid is fine. A whine usually is indicative of tiny air bubbles being trapped in the fluid, or of course low fluid level.

If the fluid is up, the whine should go away in a little time.

Easier to pick up a bunch of Type F and save the extra. That way you're covered on p/s and tranny fluid

Well I got the hose yesterday and tried to install it. Freaking Advance Autos hose does not fit. It does not have the flare fitting on the PS pump either. You would think that would be an easy purchase but no. Now I have to wait another week to get one from a mustang store.
