Hello i have a 289 engine i have installed an edelbrock performer manifold and a edelbrock 500cmf 4 barrel carb , i have used 15W-40 oil for the engine witch i believe has never been overhauled , the problem i have is that i get white smoke on start up and also when the car decelerates from high rev, please advise me what i must do , before i use this oil i didn't had this issue ,the oil brand is Q8 , please advise what i must do? or if you have any reconciliations.

if the only thing you did is change the oil, then I'd say that would be the problem.
i use valvoline VR1 (20w50)

blue smoke is oil burning...water is white and and too much gas is grey...but it can also appear whiteish....your probably running too rich...

Is it white or blue smoke?
White is water and blue is oil.
If it's white water is getting into the intake under high engine vacuum conditions. Maybe past the intake gaskets. Or it's rich as rmodel suggests.
If it's blue it's valve seals/guides. I lean towards this condition because it smokes on startup. That's clue #1 for valve seals.
You could just do the heads, but because it's never been apart rebuilding the entire motor is the best option as the rings and bearings are probably tired too.
If the oil consumption isn't too high, rebuilding isn't an option and you can live with the smoke, don't worry about it for now.

If its oil:

Could be something small like valve seals. However, if you installed a nicer intake and carb on an older engine, and it starting running higher in the RPM range it's possible that you could have forced the piston higher in the cylinder causing the piston rings to hit a lip that naturally builds in the top of the cylinder. This damages the rings causing you to leak oil. This problem would get worse over time. Additionally this can break a ring causing internal cylinder wall damage.

are you running a PCV valve? I had one stick and it would cause the same issue you had.

Check into that maybe.

Go ahead and get a PVC valve for it. All engines no matter how new have some gasses blowby the rings. The PVC valve channels them back into the carb where they are safely burnt and channeled out the exaust. As it sits now the blowby is being released out the valve cover near the intake for your heater blower motor and will get channeled into your face. This can be a dangerous thing when the engine gets older and has more blowby. Even in the days before PVC there was a tube from the valve cover to the underside of the car to channel the gasses away from the inside of the car.

Also if the PVC port is open on the carb then you will have a large vacuum leak from there. Try capping it as a temporary thing until you get the PVC installed.
