axle bearing replacement question
On a 1968 289 convertible, driver's side, have new rear axle bearing and retainer pressed onto the extracted axle. Inspection of journal for seal shows no problems. Inspection of journal for the axle bearing shows no problems. However the journal area for the retainer appears to be worn around the lower edge of the opening toward the wheel or closest to the bearing. Other than removing the passenger side rear axle for comparison, (or visiting a salvage yard) how does one determine acceptable appearance or wear tolerances for the retainer journal or for that matter is this an issue since the bearing and seal seem to be the key components.
I wouldnt worry about where the retainer goes. The retainer shouldnt be making contact with the housing. I would venture a guess that you had some junk at one point in time get by the retainer or a bad bearing allow the retainer to contact and that is what messed your surface up. Just make sure you are all clean by the retainer and you should be good to go.
