Default Door unlocks itself.

My car is a 64-65 coupe. When you lock the drivers side with the button or the key. Then either use the inside handle or the outside button/handle, it physically moves the lock **** to the up/unlocked position. Very strange. Has happened since I got my car. Just replaced the key-switch with a new one.
I know something is installed wrong I just cant figure it out.
Is the key-way on the wrong side of the car (no lock rods on passenger side to check this out. Yet, working on drivers side first) Is there a left and a right key-way/lock?
Thanks all.

It is supposed to unlock when you pull the inner door handle. I think there is a driver and passenger door lock, maybe you have them reversed.

But, I bet 2+2 has a diagram, photo or something to show you, just wait and he'll chime in.

That is the way it opens from the outside as well. You press the button on the outside handle and the lock button goes right up inside the car and the door opens right up. For the life of me, I cant figure it out. Mainly because I cant see any of the internal works. Have to do most of the work by feel.
I really want these to work correctly since someone ran-sacked my passenger comp this week. Nothing stolen, but it might slow them down if they had to break in instead of just opening the doors. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

…use the inside handle [ed.] it physically moves the lock **** to the up/unlocked position.
This is normal. Simpler times.

…use the outside button/handle, it physically moves the lock **** to the up/unlocked position.
This is not normal. The lock and/or rods are not properly assembled.

Exactly what 2+2GT said.

I used the picture and checked it all, went through and put new clips on every rod. The button no longer unlocks the door.
Now there seems to be a new problem. Lock the door, close the door and and the door unlocks. Right when it makes contact with the latch in the door frame. I even tried holding the button on the handle in, while closing the door,(I remember having to do this on my grandfathers car) it unlocks right as the door closes. If I use the key to lock the door, no problems... but the door has to be closed first.
Anyone have any clue to what may be wrong. Thanks all!

Nothing is wrong. It is, by design, impossible to lock your keys in a 64-66 Mustang.

No. That would make it possible to lock your keys in the car.
