Front Shocks
This is a pic of a '67 but your '65 is similar.

Unbolt the upper shock and rotate shaft 90*, remove the upper shock mounts, then the export brace (V from the firewall to shock towers). This will expose a large enough hole to lift the shocks through. The springs are in no danger of coming out, they are larger than the opening and seated from underneath. The only way to get springs out is from the bottom after removing the UCA so you are safe. Remove the two lower nuts that hold the shock and lift out.
Reassemble in reverse order, lower nuts, export brace, upper shock mounts. It will help to slightly raise the front as mentioned especially if you are installing gas shocks that have to be compressed slightly to be mounted.

O.k. got the driver side off, those bottom nuts were a pain in the *** to get off. They were all rusted and the shock was all corroded looking. They are gabriel shocks, are those crappy or good? I am replacing with KYB GR2 gas shocks.
