Default How do i put a 1 wire alternator in a 65

So I've discovered I have a charging problem and see it as an ideal opportunity to use a one wire alternator lying around from another project that never happened.

But how is the best way to do this?

A code 289 factory standard everything.

One wire 80 amp internally regulated alternator.

Any advice?

All I did was install the new alt, connect a short 2AWG battery wire from the alt to the starter relay and removed the external regulator, tied the rest of the stock wires off. Runs great. No matter what you do, at least you know you can do that much and it will run.

You will defeat the ALT light circuit by the removal of the Vreg - which is not a big deal. You may want to think about some kind of aftermarket voltage meter to monitor your charging circuit in its place (lots easier to install and understand than an ammeter).

As previously discussed, make sure you add the bigger gauge wire from the alt output terminal to the battery side of the stater relay to carry the extra current from the new unit.

I'm wondering what advantage there is to converting to one-wire alternator. I've worked on a LOTTA Mustangs, and put 400,000 miles on my AC-equipped 66 with the original charging setup.

for somebody like me that doesnt care about the look of a stock wiring harness or the mess, its just easier to wire and easier to find a high output(100A +) alternator.

I like having a 100 amp alternator. All the lights are much brighter and don't dim with the AC on etc.
