reinstalling drive pinion gear
So I was replacing my transmission and did something stupid. I removed the drive pinion while I was taking off the driveshaft. Don't ask me what possessed me to do this, but I need to put it back.
I haven't dissassembled the yoke or any other part of the rearend other than removing the whole yoke/drive pinion assembly.
I've gotten it back into place most of the way, but it's not mounting flush. I'd like to get a second opinion before I actually start trying to hammer it in since I'd rather not destroy my bearings.
The pics below show how far in the assembly goes before it stops.
what kinda hassle did my stupidity get me? Am I gonna have to drop the whole rear end for reassembly? Or is it just a matter of a little elbow grease to get that thing back into place?

I would pull it back out and be sure the rubber gasket isnt in the way or torn and then use a rubber mallet to wiggle it back into place. Be sure you fill uo the rear with oil again after you get it in. Not too sure what the torque specs are. You may want to google that. Try wiggling the pinion back and forth while you seat it. Or even put the rear end up on stands to let the wheels move a bit. Your bearings may be worn allowing the differential to move a little off. But probably .

by the way the rear end was JUST rebuilt, so the last thing I wanted was to take it apart again. However I was removing the trans to get it rebuilt and the stupid demon possessed me and for some reason I removed the drive pinion instead of just unhooking the drive shaft.
