Did that year even have a gearshift lock the worked from the ignition?

thats what im thinking, it could be that the shifter is just stuck or rusty, easy to check, just crawl under the car and have a look.

I'll ask and or say it again, how is a lock smith going to do it without having a key pattern to go by? There had to be dozens of keys made.

they do it by using the lock cylinder, the place i work at makes you keys for locks if you bring in the lock...

I don't know how the hell they do it but they do. My younger son is in the habit of loosing his keys, he has called locksmiths and had them make keys "on site" more than once..... and more than twice....

I had a locksmith make a key for my old Bronco, he just put the key blank in, using pliers turned side to side. He was turning pretty hard, I thought he might break it, but he didn't. He took some files to it and tried again until he got it to work. Took him about 4-5 tries!

Yeah breaking things just cost more to replace it and being a 71 none of the steering column is remade.A locksmith is the only option to do it to me.
