T% speedo gear
I am running a t5 and i never installed the correct speedo gear. I have to install a new flywheel so i am going to take out the trans.
Is it tough to install the gear and what gear do i need. I have 3.73 gears and 25 in tall tires.

also, i previously had a 3 speed. I have it hooked up now and the speedo does not work at all. I dont know if it ever worked because the car was not drivable when i started the project.

No removing the drive gear simply calls for removal of the tailshaft and sliding the gear off.
You'll want to install a black 6 tooth drive gear back on that tailshaft and you'll probably want to use an 18 tooth driven gear on the end of speedo cable.

Which gear are you replacing?..If its just the speedo gear on the cable it takes about five minutes at the most. There is just a clip that you remove with a small screwdriver and swap the gear..No need to remove trans...While you have the cable out of the trans get someone to sit in the car and watch the speedo..You can give it a quick spin with your fingers or a drill to see if the speedo works.....One thing to be careful of is which side of the trans the cable goes into...The gears are cut differently..The 3 speed cable goes in on the opposite side compared to a 4 speed..I believe the T5 uses the same gear as the 4 speed so that could be your trouble if you are using an original 3 speed gear....When you pull the gear out it will likely be chewed up a bit if that is the problem...

FWIW I have a Z spec and when I tried the biggest drivin gear the ratio was right, but it ate it in a day. So now this spring when I put the trans back in I will change out the drive gear the way Gun Jam mentioned.
I have 3:55 gears.

ohh also FWIW...I found that some of the driven gears that fit on the speedo cable have a long end on them like a round dowel. This dowel is so long that it actually bottoms out just about the same time the screw on speedo cable retaining bracket bottoms out. The result is the driven gear getting jammed up inside the case because of the dowel on the gear hitting the inside of the t5. The results is instant failure of the driven gear and possible damage to the drive gear. Make sure the new speedo gear has a dowel the same length as the old one.
