Default coughing and hacking

soi have a 1968 mustang with a 302. we were trying to set the timing the other night and found out that the vacuum advance was not working properly because of where it was attatched. we re attatched the line to another fitting on the carb, ste the timing and tooker out, it seemed to werk ok last night but today i started it up and got out of the laneway and tried to go and as soon as i stepped on it it would cough and hack, backfire and quit. then i took it back into the laneway, let it sit fer a while running and then it seemed to werk OK. what could be the problem, too much advance? er was it just too cold when i started driving? any suggestions?

Now it seems like the advance is not working corectly. Did it run ok, before you messed with it?
