Default 4 speed automatic

I was just curious about putting a 4 speed automatic transmission in a 65 Mustang. I know some later Mustangs came with them, but will it work in my Mustang if i wanted to install one?

yea it'll work. Do a search for installing an AOD tranny. You'll find tons of info.

no it's not. I haven't done the swap, but off the top of my head I know you need a new trans crossmember and you may need to shorten your driveshaft a little bit. I also think you have to get some kind of adapter plate for the bellhousing to bolt up right. Like I said, just do a search. You'll find all the info you need. It's a pretty common swap.

With all the swap parts it will bolt in but make sure you got the tv cable adjusted before driving it.

Well, you'll have to get the special AOD conversion crossmember, shift lever for the trans, shift rod, conversion TV cable, flex plate, and at least in some cases, the driveshaft needs to be altered.

If you're comfortable with cutting and welding equipment to fabricate your own stuff it is possible to modify the early crossmember to suit the AOD. I believe that if you do this, you'll also have to tweak the P-brake mechanism as well.

You may or may not be able to adapt the C4 shifter to suit.

As Andrew has already mentioned, you'll have to get the TV cable adjusted properly. Failure to do so can cook the tranny inside a hundred miles. You'll need the cable itself, which might end up being an aftermarket item.

Maybe somebody who knows about what flexplate change might be required and if there are any balancing issues involved.

And, I was going to mention some of the later Mustangs will use this electronic version. To the OP, when acquiring a later 4 speed auto, you need to confirm whether you are getting an early trans, (uses a TV cable) or a later model that is computer controlled. This will make a difference on installation, both in cost and complexity.
