Default Vacuum Advance Trouble

Hey guys,
I think I am having a vacuum advance problem. I removed the vacuum advance to time the motor, added the advance line, then it started running like crap. Ill step on the throttle, sometimes it dies, sometimes it backfires and then takes off. And its rather odd too because the marks on the balancer are not factory, so im not even sure if the marks are correct. Is there an option for a distributor without a vacuum advance? And is there any major modification that Im going to have to do? I know there are other ignition systems out there such as MSD or Mallory, but dont have the spare cash to drop right now.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Mike

The advance should be hooked up to ported vacuum and should not advance at idle. You may be on manifold vacuum.

Just saw this discussed again on VMF. Doesn't matter so long as your initial and total timing are correct. I run mine on ported and manifold and choose whichever gives me the best results.

I would check your #1 cylinder's compression stroke TDC and make sure it coincides with your balancer's 0°.

Did you plug your vacuum line while disconnected?
