Question 66 Acceleration Hesitation

Hello, I'm looking for some engine help. Ever since we had the 302 cu in. engine rebuilt in my 66 coupe, there has been a slight hesitation if I step on the gas hard to take off.
It's not a dragster or anything but I'd like to get it fixed. It just feels "bogged down" for a moment until it finally catches and begins to accelerate. My only thoughts are that my carb might be too big... Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Was your carb rebuilt when you did the engine? It sounds like a bad accelerator pump to me....

It may just need adjusted. I would check to see that when you blip the accelerator the pump arm moves the pump and squirts fuel into the carb. If it doesnt squirt with just a little blip, then it needs to be adjusted tighter using the bolt/screw head with the spring that sits on the accelerator arm. adjust it to barely touching and so that when you are at full push of the pedal you still have a little give at the pump arm. That keeps it from binding up and trying to push the arm into/through the pump diaphram. Then possibly tune the carb, and check your timing. They will all play a hand in your throttle response.

I have a buddy that had no acceleration with his 289 until i adjusted his accelerator pump and then it would burn up the tires from a stop.

@jp, I have a 600cfm Edelbrock carb, bought new when we rebuilt the engine. It has a moderate cam and pistons, headers, and stock heads.

@boogerschnot, what do you mean by "blip?"

Ya a 600 will be fine on that might run a bit rich and take some adjusting/ jet and power valve change. But it should not stumble. I would try what others have said.

Thanks jp. Oh and also, we bought a jet kit and put on the smallest jets, with the idea that the richness was causing it to take a second to respond.

what size main jet are you running. With what u have i would think you would be somewhere close to a 65 jet on the primarys. I would not just put in the smallest ones. I think most of the times a car running a bit rich will not stumble if its tuned decent. I would really read up on how to tune a carb holley has some good info on their website.
