Default 289 reliable hp

i have a 1966 289 and i was planing on doind a rebuild soon. without stroking or anything too extensive such as a supercharger or blowerwhats the cheapest most efective way to get more horsepower. cam? performer intake manifold? new carb? porting and polishing heads? will havinf a working hood scoup or cowel induction do anything?

If you do a real rebuild, they will bore the block .030 over, however this will make little difference in what you feel through the throttle. Get an upgraded cam, but not a radical one. This could add about 30 hp.

Assuming you have a 2v carburetor, upgrading to an aluminum intake and a 4v carburetor will help also.

You could then add headers and an X-pipe to help the breathing. Upgrade to electronic ignition too.

BTW, is this your daily driver or a weekend car or a racer or what? The reason I ask is because you could do a lot of things to add gobs of HP, but it wouldnt be a very good daily driver and might not be too fun to drive at all.
