I installed my radio under the dash, under the ash tray. I got a 460 watt amp, and a ten in the trunk. I got 2 5 in. pioneer speakers in the front and two 4x6's in the rear. SOunds pretty nice, and no mods to the car whats so ever.
Thats the right idea! thats what I will do.

yeah man, Lets see. I paid $110 for the stereo. I paid around $140 for the speakers. I paid $200 for the amp and sub. so around $450. Thats not too bad. It sounds great, but it rattles the car too much.

Here guys - this is what you're talking about (radio + CD player) and seemingly the best way to go for putting a modern day system into a classic while making it look as stock as possible. Pricey, but worth it!

I have a 67, so installing a head unit only involved cutting the radia bezel, not the metal dash(this was done by the previous owner, not myself). With that, I have 2 rockford fosgate 6X9's in a custom vinyl package tray that I made, and 2 6" speakers in the front kick panels. I also have what's called a backseat driver, which installs behind the back seat and includes 2 8" subwoofers and a small amplfier.

I would recommend only getting 2 package tray speakers, and not getting 6x9's. The reason is because 6x9's dont fit without a little cutting of the metal underneath. However, 6" or 5" fit perfectly (I cant remember actual speaker sizes, but those are close numbers). I regret getting kick panel speakers because you cant find any speakers that are good and shallow enough to fit . The kick panels already jut out a lot, and getting spacers would look ridiculous.

As for the backseat driver. This thing is a good deal for about 250 bucks, and installs pretty easily. The thing is, with good exaust, you'll never feel the bass pump except a a stoplight, and then it's just embarrasing. You look like a ricer in a really nice mustang. The purists would cry. The sound of the backseat driver really isnt that good either. I would just get a good amp and a good speaker box (or build one yourself) and that will do nicely.

If you have a 65' or 66' do yourself a favor and buy a radio that will fit in the orignial spot. They make ones now that can hook up to a cd player in the trunk. It's not easy to change the cd, but it's better than cutting the dash. The second option is to get a secret audio system: http://www.soundmove.com/secretaudio.htm
This will let you mount a head unit under the dash and then allow you to flip it up to hide it.

Finally, if you have some extra cash, instal sound dampening material like dynamat, under the backseat and carpet areas. If dynamat is too expensive, do what I did and get fatmat http://www.fatmat.com/ it's cheaper and it does the trick. This will help your speaker sound tremendously.

Here is a picture of the backseat driver installed:

And with Matting material:

So does anyone really bother powering up the center dash speaker when they put in a new system?

I really dont think you'd even want to go to the trouble to do that. The sound stinks there anyway.

Well, best buy has dynamat for 60 bucks and you get a ridiculously small amount. 9sqft I think. With Fatmat, you get 36sqft, which will cover the back half of the car, for about 50 bucks. 36sqft of dynamat is 250 bucks. It's basically the same stuff. Order it online.
