Help me. I replaced the 4 barrel carb on my 71 I had everything set and hooked up, so I though; and before I made adjustments I realized a line running from my exhaust manifold to my old carb was not hooked up to the new Holley 65-1850s. It is a copper tube with a nut on the end to connect into the card. I have no idea what it is, what it's for, or where it goes. Please help me before I screw something up badly.

Could be your choke tube. I don't have a Holley, but on my Autolite there is a stainless steel tube that runs from the exhaust manifold into the autochoke housing of the carb. It screws onto the housing with a nut. What it does is transfer warm air to the autochoke, which opens/closes the choke as needed. You can run the car without this being hooked up, but you might have to run at a higher idle so it doesn't stall out.

 

I just looked up a pic of a Holley 65-1850. Looks like they are either manual or electric choke, so there isn't a location for a choke tube to be screwed into the housing. What kind of carb and choke did you have on the car before?

 

Thank you for the wealth of info, I kind of thought it might be the choke bu I obviously wasn't sure! Right now I am running a manual choke, and before I installe this as far as I know it was a stock carb as it was so worn and the gasket so shot it was old. I couldn't make out any make or model numbers at all. I was told when I bought it that it was a 302 two barrel but the carb is a 4 barrel, so idk if the previous owner knew anything haha.

I ended up ripping that pipe out and just plugging the exhaust manifold, should I unplug it or leave it plugged? Thanks again!

 

Probably was an autolite or motorcraft carb by the sound of it. I don't think it will matter either way. My choke tube rusted and broke off in the manifold and I am running car without it plugged. Drilling it out is on my list of things to do.

 

The choke tube missing hasn't seemed to affect anything yet so I am going to let it be. Thanks again!

 

here in the south you dont really need to worry about a choke...i live just a few mins north of the florida line and i havent seen snow here since 1989 when it actually stuck...if youre in northern alabama it might be a little cold natured for you in the coming months ahead...

 

Well that is good to know, I am in the south part of Alabama like 2 hours from Panama City so it stays warm all year round (at least to me) haha. Thanks for the info!
