Can anyone tell me real color of the 65 coupe top fender bolts as they came from the factory? They are advertised in several different colors.Thanks.

Hi,
I believe they are a phosphate coated black. They were not painted. The bolts were painted body color in the trunk (hinges etc). There is a list "out there" that describes these details. I have one somewhere, but, not yet scanned. I learned there are minor differences between the early mustangs (64.5) and the later models.
I've never seen them "advertised" in colors???

I need to order some black ones, I went with a silver color over the gold. I wish some vendors would know this and stop selling fender bolts in the wrong color when you use that fancy website (That offers free shipping, but I wont mention names) to pick bolts for a 65!

Hi,
If you want exacting fasteners go to AMK Products. Although NPD and several vendors are carrying their bolt kits too. Again, I've never seen those bolts offered in colors?
Good Luck with your product.

The correct finish for the bolts is "phosphate and oil", more grey than black. I have a Metuchen '65 coupe with 1,300 original miles, and it has the "HTS" mark bolts on it. We carry these under # 378178-SA for individuals or 16006-10K for a kit of 6 pieces. I'm sure plenty of other suppliers carry them as well... Hope this helps.

Hey Rick,
Thanks for chiming in with the P/Ns. I knew there a "phosphate" there, just didn't remember the "oil" part.

+ 2 on phosphate and oil
This issue has also been discussed by Bob Aliberto in the pages of Mustangs Monthly. (if you have to ask who-it's time to buy the magazine)

(PS: if you Google for it there's a procedure on how to renew this finish on older unpainted HW)
