Default Auto transmission?

Should a automatic transmission still shift into gear if the radiator is out of the car, the transmission cooler lines not connected and the battery is disconnected?

Thanks

I don't want to run it, just trying to figure out why my auto transmission is rolling around like it's in neutral. just got it back from having the a 8" rear end installed in my 65 inline 6 and they pulled the motor and trans but didn't do anything to them. So wondering if not having things connected from 6 months would make the transmission seem to be in neutral?

Forget the line pressure comment for now, because your not running the engine and are just trying to shift through the gear ranges. You should be able to hit all gears / positions of the transmission, period. If in park and still rolls around then the transmission linkage is; not connected, bent or out of adjustment. A simple under the car visual check should let you see if it is connected or has a new shiny spot where it got bend during removal or installation. There would be no need to change the adjustment just for a removal & installation of the same transmission.

IMHO...Totally normal, as long as it's not in park.

The difference between park and the other gears is a parking pawl that is engaged to effectively hold the output shaft locked.
