Wiper Switch Wiring
Hi everyone,
I have been a using the valuable information on this site for over a year now to help me various projects on my 66 coupe and now have a question I haven't been able to locate an answer for.
I have a single speed wiper motor with a washer and have switch number C5ZZ-17A553-C, which is correct as far as I can tell. When I pull out the switch the pump does not work. I bypassed the switch by jumping from the power directly to the pump wire (both connect to the switch) and the pump works. My first thought is the switch isn't working, but before I buy a new one, I have traced all wires but one. If this mysterious wire is related to the pump, maybe this is what is failing. Anybody have a diagram of what all 7 connections are for on this switch? This is the link to the diagram I have, but it only shows a 2-speed config or a single speed without washer.

That's the strange thing - there are 7 wires and I have identfied 6 of them:
4 are directly related to the singe speed motor
1 is power from the ignition switch
1 comes directly from the washer pump
That last one is the mystery. I haven't been able to trace it, it's behind the dash and difficult to get to and I haven't been able to locate where it goes.
If worse comes to worse, I will be taking the instrument panel off this winter to paint the dash and I will trace it then, but I was hoping I could get the pump working off the switch before that.

7 wires at the switch which indicates two speed circuit. 5 wires indicate a single switch circuit. Only dual speed circuits have a washer pump (IAW the Ford WDM book):
Wiring circuits (7 wire-2 speed):
Orange-white goes to the ign sw.
Black-white goes to the washer pump (+12)
Blue goes to the wiper motor
White goes to the wiper motor
Red goes to the wiper motor
Yellow goes to the wiper motor
Green goes to the wiper motor.
white goes to the washer pump to the wiper motor
There is also a dedicated ground circuit within the wiper motor thru what looks to be a filter capacitor. The 3 white wires are the ground circuit 1 goes back to the dash.
To validate if the switch is working right, engage the switch and check for voltage to the pump (black wire)
5 wire circuit( 1 speed):
Orange-white to ign switch
white to ground ( 2 places)
Orange-black to wiper motor
Black to wiper motor
Blue to wiper motor

I must have something of a hybrid system then. It is definitely a 1-speed switch, it only clicks over once to turn on the wipers and can go no further. The color of the wires from the pump match the colors you describe in the 5-wire circuit; Orange-White, White, Orange-black, black, and blue. It also appears to be a 1-speed motor.
In your 7-wire circuit, you mention a white wire that goes to the washer pump to the wiper motor, that white wire is my mystery one, I can't tell where it goes. I only have 1 wire to the pump, it is the black-white one. As I mentioned, when I connect the black-white directly to the orange-white from the ignition, the pump works, it just doesn't work through the switch. All signs point to a bad switch, I just want to try and figure out that extra white wire I have.

I had a look the 64 WDM and they show a 1 speed with washer configuration. It uses a solid black wire from the switch to the washer pump and the washer pump is grounded locally at the pump (no ground return wiring to the wiper motor). The white wire you refer to goes from the wiper switch to the wiper motor. If you can't get a 64 diagram, let me know and I'll upload one to my photbucket acct. for you to access.
Thanks sounds like exactly what I have, there is no return wire from the pump, it is grounded through the fender wall (I did check for continuity and that is fine). If you could upload that diagram that would be fantastic.

Just start at the washer pump and color the 1 wire that goes to the wiper switch, that's your circuit to ohm out. If it's good time for a new switch.
