Default MSD Ignition questions.

Hey everyone, have a quick question about an MSD system I plan to install on my 71.

Looking to good ol' Craigslist to buy an MSD 6AL, possibly a coil as well. The only thing is that I am definitely not going to trust any sort of wires I get from anyone, and I can almost guarantee I won't get any rubber bushings or different connectors to crimp on to my system if I need to. I checked all over MSD's home site, jegs, summitracing, etc. and I cannot for the life of me see anywhere to buy JUST the wiring for an MSD system! Anyone know of a place I could look?

Thank you!

Hi,
There is nothing unusual about the connectors supplied even on a new unit. Yes, on a used units, the average "Joe" has shortened, lengthened or modified the wiring, but, it's nothing that can be easily fixed and useable. Your concern, should be more in the operation of the unit. But this can be easily fixed by shipping it to "TechWest Racing" in NC. They refurbish MSDs for the racing boys. They will check it for proper operation and supply a new wiring harness. I know this, as I have a unit in the garage now as a back up from them.
It'll cost about $100, or so, for their service. Good Luck!

^ I did the same thing as BuckeyeDemon. Or you could give the MSD tech line a call and ask for the part number. They are pretty good at getting the part numbers that you need.

Thanks for all the help/opinions guys, very much appreciated. Think I'm going to save myself the future headache and self *** kicking and just buy a new one, haha.

Here's another question though...since there's a rev limiter in the 6AL, that means it counts the revs correct? If correct, does that mean I can run a tach somehow off it? My car is auto so I have warning lights where my stock tach should be...but I would really like to install a tach and program a shift light. Is this possible?

Thanks again guys!

Oh boy, here we go again! Adding a multi-strike box to a mustang running a current sensing tach! I guarantee the original poster will return with....."I added a MSD 6Al box and now my tach doesn't work" thread..LOL!

Yeah you know everything, you hit it right on the head didn't you? I was just asking a question, sorry we all can't be apparent mustang gurus like yourself. You have permission to stop posting in this thread, starting now.

Hey Bud,
Sorry you took offense to my "light hearted" but truthful comment. It was meant to help rather than inflame. It is a know fact that current sensing factory installed tachs don't, by themselves, play nice with these muti-strike boxes. It wasn't until a few years later ('73-'74), when the voltage sensing factory tachs were introduced, that you didn't need a tach adapter.
However, If you are planning on installing an after market tach, then, you should be good to go, as they say.
BTW, I never claimed to "be an apparent mustang guru", but appreciate the thought.
Happy trails.....
