What kind of dizzy are you using? If you are using traditional mechanical points, I found them to be hard to adjust consistently and finally used a point dwell gauge, which to set them because my use of a feeler gauge gave a dwell reading that was off by 20-30 percent. Unfortunately, I was off in the direction of less point dwell=less spark. As they run, the point block wears down decreasing the dwell. Yes, a correctly set standard ignition system can give a good-running engine. Without vacuum advance, you are making your adjustment that much harder.

If you are looking to add vacuum advance to your ignition, I suggest you get something higher performance than a standard dizzy. Many forum members have good solutions and can advise.

This is the one we got. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MAA-8555401C/
This is a Mallory HEI electronic spark system with vacuum and mechanical advance.
The extra spark voltage allows increasing the sparkplug gap for better ignition, and never needs adjustment once properly set. Compatible with solid and roller cams, replacement parts are very reasonable.

I don't know that unit, but considering the time I spent drooling over MSD systems for my car, that MSD should do a great job firing your engine!
