Default Ring Gear Wear

Hey guys, thought I would ask if this nick on the ring gear is acceptable, my thought is instinct is telling me no, but I would like to find out for sure.

I'm not a professional gear builder, but I wouldn't think so. It shouldn't be on the contact pattern, so I can't see it causing any problems...

If you can find no other signs of scuffing or gouging, that nick is not an issue. I would be inclined to try to figure out how the nick got there, though, and satisfy myself that it would not occur again later.
Best,
Al

It looks like an impact caused it; possibly by being dropped before installation. Also possible some FOD caused it. If it were a turbine blade, I'd hit it once with a file and call it good.

There are no stress risers, that I can see, so I'd install it and run it.

Thanks for the input guys, I would run it but I discovered that the gear ratio isn't what I thought (3.25) instead of the 3.77. I am looking to do my t5 swap and I don't think the 3.25 will cut it so back to the junkyard.

Actually, my bride has a '66 w/289, 3X2's, a T5 and runs a 3.25. Gets about 28 mpg on the road. Runs like a scalded dog.
Best,
Al

Default More bad news?

So I pulled the housing out from under the work bench today and started cleaning it up, under the gasket that goes between the housing and the 3rd member I found this:

Think I should be worried?

Well, I guess we know where that impact happened...

Just kidding. I may be the wrong guy to ask, but as long as oil doesn't run out through there, and it's not a clearanced part, what can go wrong with it?

Hopefully that bit of metal went to the pan and stayed there.
