Question Understanding my temperature gauge

In my 1966 with a 298v8 I am trying to get my temperature gauge to work.

So far:
o When I run the car, the gauge never moves.
o If I short the wire at the temperature sensor, the gauge moves to hot.
Conculsion: gauge is good, wiring is good, sensor is bad.

Removed the temperature sensor. (Note to self: drain enough coolant so that it does not geyser up over the engine.) Tested with ohm meter. Cold it has zero resistance. Put it in a bowl of 180 degree water. Still zero resistance. Conclusion: sensor is bad.

Purchased new sensor at NAPA (part number TS6153). When I ran the hot water test on the new sensor, it acted the same as the original: zero resistance at 180 degrees.

I now doubt that installing the new sensor will fix the problem. Any suggestions out there?

Thanks, Bob O'Hara

Hmm.. Thats how I would have tested it.. Maybe you need to leave it in the water a little longer? But then again.. Maybe you were reading this wrong. Zero resistance accross the temp sensor would give you the same indication as shorting the wire to the block. 0 resistance is a short.

Maybe try again.. Check the tab on the sensor and read to the threads of the sensor.?

Thanks for the info. In the end I replaced the sensor and now it all works.
