Default temperature sensor replacement

My 1970 mach 1, 351 cleveland temperature gauge has stopped working. I am going to go through the various problem areas, temp sensor, thermostat and then the gauge. Is there any other possible problems areas? The sensor is located just below the thermostat/top right of water pump, do I need to drain any/all of the radiator? Thanks

With the key on, if you ground the wire, it should peg the guage to HOT.If it doesnt, there could be a break in the wire or the guage is bad.If none of the guages work, then it could be intrument voltage regulator or a power issue.

To change the sensor, just lower the fluid level to below the sensor.

With the key on I checked the wire and got an indication that it is working but nothing on the gauge. I am assuming that my problem is not the sensor or the wire but the panel gauge. All other gauges are working. Thank you for your assistance.
