Default Ammeter

I am having trouble with my ammeter on a 68 mustang. The harness has been messed with. One wire goes to positive side of starter solenoid. Where does the other one go. Is there a way to check the ammeter?

Fairly simple operation , the one wire is hot the other wire is ground.

as far as the voltage gauge goes it doesn't matter where it gets its 12 volts from as long as it has 12 volts key on and a ground

That's how you hook up to read voltage not current.
