EFI with stock FUEL sending unit..

When I went EFI, my thoughts were reliability and ease. To that end, that meant purchasing a new aftermarket harness (RJM injection tech, available in many places) with all new wires and connectors and also a simple, reliable fuel system kit (http://www.ronmorrisperformance.com/...duct_Code=9193). You may be able to save some bucks by sourcing your own parts; however, installation of this kit is a breeze and it flat out works. I do not have any fuel starvation issues and do not have a filter on the upstream side of the pump. Everything I read says not to (YMMV).

Pretty much every factory EFI system runs 2 filters (and most aftermarket), the pre filter is typically a sock type on the pickup in the tank though (even with in tank). They can get clogged though, don't always have good filtration and/or good surface area for flow, and are a bitch to service.
That's why I prefer external pumps myself, run a good pre and post filter. In the case of Aeromotive's filters, they're REALLY good filter elements (expensive though), and have excellent flow, so they don't affect fuel delivery. The Aeromotive pre filter is large enough that it functions partially as a surge tank for the pump.... And it lets you have 100 micron pre filtration on the pump, which you can't get without a large filter or you get pump suction problems.
Carbs can be just as reliable (actually more, since there's a lot less to go wrong), but EFI is definitely a LOT easier to tune on.
