Default lower quarter panel patch panels

has anyone used a lower rear quarter panel patch panel? just wondering how most people install them. do you use the flanged top edge and allow it to overlap the existing metal or cut off the flange and do an edge weld? i am trying to avoid removing my entire quarter panel but i have a feeling it is inevitable.
thanks.

Both ways work fine.
Using butt weld clamps is a little more elegant technique.

I've done it both ways without any real issues.
If you welding skills are not what you would like them to be, lapping the joint gives you a lot of metal to weld on.
If your a moderately skilled welder then the butt weld would be the way to go.

Both will need body filler to finish the job.
Butt welding a little less. ....maybe.

i have those butt weld jigs but have never used them. my welding experience has just been floors on another car. i will do some practicing before i actually work on the good panels. i was just concerned about that flange. just thought having the double layer of metal would cause rust between and that you will see it inside the trunk. i will try the butt weld. thanks.

This is where good sheet metal patches are critical. The better patches are usually made of heavier 18ga sheet metal and much more forgiving when it comes to welding. This means fewer burn throughs and better penetration and consistent welds. The cheap panels are just that, cheap, and you're gonna spend more time correcting the screw ups. Remember, take your time, spread out your welds to keep the panel cool, remember the weld is going to shrink and pull the panel up as it cools.
