1965 VIN number question
Maybe someone can explain this, but according to all the info I've seen on the '65 model year, total production was 559,451. Thus, you would think that number would be the highest possible VIN for that model year. However, the VIN on the title for my '65 ends in 605698. Plus, the VIN on the left front fender is different (not unusual with past swapped parts!) and ends in 773784. The car no longer has the doorplate VIN. Both these numbers exceed the known production for 1965. Any ideas on why this is?
If memory serves me, there would be two likely explanations. First, the first VIN # would have been 100000, not 000000. Second, in addition to Mustangs being produced on the line, Falcons and I believe Fairlanes were coming off the same line and could have picked up consecutive VIN's with the Mustangs. Hope this explanation stands p to others' info.

Al

Thanks, Al. Can't understand why they would have arbitrarily started with 100,000 as the first number, though...odd. Something else that occured to me was the fact that there were also a total of 121,528 "1964 and 1/2" models made, and that these were also considered by the factory as "1965" models. Maybe the 1965 serial numbers actaully started with those cars, if so, then maybe that would add that quantity of units to the overall total of assigned numbers..???
