wierd tag weird place
this is pretty interesting for mustang purists: not to long ago when i completely striped all the undercoating , paint etc. from the underside, i noticed in the rear end, the vent hose that runs off the top of the housing bolts to the rear frame rail with a clip. While removing it, i noticed a weird yellow tag, with a wire wraped around the hole where the bolt for the clip goes. After cutting it and looking at it, the back side from what i can make out said, mx-3.25zz. my question to everyone is: has anyone encountered this tag before? does anyone know why it was put there? i only ask because, my car is as close to concourse as id like it to be, and would like to see if this tag represents gear ratio?(my car does have 3.25) and need to know if there is a vender out there that sell this tag repo? any input is appreciated!
Here is all I know. The axle tag is attached to the lower lefthand bolt on the rear axle itself. The bottom left line will give you the gear ratio, and the type of rear end (S for limited slip non-locking, and L for locking).
I have no idea what the zz stands for, and I can't even fathom a guess as to who makes those tags repro.
On edit: After reading your post again, it sounds like what you took off is a paper or plastic tag. Is that right? If so, I have no idea why that would still be on there after all these years.

i appreciate the feedback: and to answer, yes it was a paper/cardboard type tag that was still in overall good condition. the tag is square and towards the top it kinda goes into a 45 degree angle to a reinenforcment lable. as for the mx though, my a/c compressor in the engine compartment/ on the flat side next to the distributor had the markings mx 1.1 . i wonder if thats a dearborn type marking??
As for how long that tag lasted under there, its no surprise really, the owner i bought it from never drove it once, and he bought the car from the originall owner who used it to drag race on the weekends, so i really dont think it was driven in the snow, or even rain for that matter lol! thats what makes it nice to have a car with 32.000 original miles, you find some weird stuff.
edit:i appologize i re-read you reply, i understand about the tag on the third member, this tag was bolted to the vent tube that plugs in the top of rear end housing and bolts up the rear frame rail. the tag and the clip that holds on the frame rail were bolted together
