Default Need help guys

Hello All, Im new to the forum. I'm about to purchase a 1969 Fastback for like $8900.00. HEre is the thing, the windows are busted open, no windows up front. When I went to see the car yesterday, it didnt even start. The guy says it a dead battery. Everything looks good in and out of the car, those are just my issues. Do you think the not starting part is something to worry about? Now he's also telling me to go buy the battery and he will show me that it starts and runs real well. Also, I noticed underneath the car, someone had painted it all black. Is that a way to hide rust? It's not black paint, or I would notice it. It was more like tar, type of black. Please help guys. I really want the car but is it worth it?
Thanks for anyhelp you guys can give.

Dubs1,

First of welcome to the forum. I joined in a couple months ago and have found this site very informative. Everyone will chime in and give you some good advice. Here is mine. The tar looking substance is most likely an undercoating. THis can be good if there is no rust. If there is rust, it is hiding the problem and what is called Mustang cancer will eat your car alive. My advice, find someone to borrow a battery from, take the car to a dealer or trusted body shop and ask them to look it over and report their finding. Normally this will run you from $50 to $100 depending on the area you are in and how indepth they go. This is a small investment for the insurance that the car is in good shape.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Unless you're willing to restore the car, including an engine rebuild I'd start the car before I bought it. A dead battery could easily be masking a engine. Nevere trust a used car salesman!!!

Do the magnet check. EVERYWHERE. If the magnet doesnt stick then you have got bondo or rust. The underneath could just be a protective coat. Windows are not the cheapest thing. the body IS the most important thing to look at. RUST. As for the engine that is actually one of the cheapest things! I would buy a battery anyways and just run the engine and try to give it a test drive. IF it doesnt start after you replace the battery then you could have problems with your starter solieniod. (cheap)

Thank you for your quick replies. I do want to take it to a body shop and get it checked out but I dont think I'll have time. I know as soon as I pull that car out, that car is mine and he wont be hel liable for anything. The part that sucks to is that I saw this car at night. It looked clean, but who knows. I just dont want to waste 8900 down the drain for a rust bucket. And also the motor, how much would you guys say it would cost if I was to drop in a 428? I was just thinking, if I put all power in there, it may crack the rust apart..lmao...
Seriously, i just dont know what to do...but I do want the car! So if anyone lese can put in their 2 cents, it will be much appreciated.

First are you set on a 69 fastback or are your choices varied? You shouldnt buy the first car you see. I would look on ebay and in classifieds first. Take your time and dont get ripped off. It sounds wierd how the guy says hes not liable as soon as you buy. Get the body man to come see the vehicle. They will do it.... for a price.

dubs,
as far as your worrys go, if you do your homework, and really take a look at all the major points of the car, (torque boxes, floors, 1/4 panels, engine compartment) you should be good. If the car has rust on 1/4 panels ,fenders doors, dont be discouraged, just about every mustang ive seen has some rust in some shape or form. If you really want to know if the floors are good, just take a flat head screw driver with you, if the guy selling it attests to it, red flag...let him know that if the floors are good it wont damage anything. for the motor the skys really the limit. Dont just settle for what you know, do some research, see what will offer the best power to weight ratio, and what will keep the car streetable, not inpractical.
