Why? The 289 was just the 289. It was the 351 that is a totally different engine depending on whether it is a Cleveland or a Windsor.

So the 289 was no different regardless of wheather it was a cleavland or Windsor? THe reason I ask is because I was reading a book "How the rebuild Small Block Ford Engines by Tom Monroe. In chapter 3 "Parts identification & Interchange" he confuses the reader by making it sould like there is a difference in all ford small blocks depending on the WIndsor or Cleavland. I guess now that I think about it, DUH!!!

Thanks
Gary

gary,
289 all carried the same heads, altough many will argue that 289 4v and high performace 289 had different heads, but, not true, all were the same heads.
It is however very possible to bolt 351 Windsor heads on a 289, i have seen it done, if thats what you would wanna do, right on!!!

Yeah, those 351 Cleveland heads are huge compared to the 351 Windsor's heads. The 289-302-and both 351's are all small block.

You can C heads on any small block ford, with the right intake that is.

Cleveland was exclusive to the 351C only. The 289, 302 and 351W were all considered Windsor motors.

yes, i believe the cleveland was 351's only.

I remember hearing that the 351, both cleveland and windsor, were considered...technically...to be "mid-blocks". Not quite a small block, but not a big block.

I dono how much truth there is to that but i have heard it from two different people over the years that i know have had no contact with each other ever so its obviously either a somewhat wide spread rumor or technically true...i dont know.

i think its a small block.

According to my ford interchange manual only the 351w is a true windsor. The 221 260 289 and 302 were all built at the Cleveland plant. The 351C was the first of the 335 series engines. Everybody my self included calls them windsors though. Just a useless piece of info I came across tonite. When I think of Cleveland engines its the ones with the big heads and canted valves

Hey Gary, FYI all 289 heads are NOT the same. The difference is in the size of the combustion chamber. They range from 47.7- 64.7 cc
