Default Better shock choices for a 71-73 by changing the upper shock mount?

Front shock choices for a 71-73 are marginal. I can get street Bilsteins, adjustable Spax, or dump a pile of cash on VariShocks. The 68-70 croud gets to enjoy a pile of reasonably priced sport and race choices from Bilstein.

Could I run the much more common 68-70 shocks on the front with a 18A017 upper shock plate from a 68-70 instead of the rod style mount on my 71? Anybody do this? If the plate isn't a match I could always make one up as long as the shock length is the same.

Anybody have experience with this?

Thanks,
Peter

Several guys on the 7173mustang board have done this. Seems to work well.
