Default Engine Fire

This morning my daughter had a fire under the hood on her 67 mustang. Thankfully, the fire was pretty much limited to the engine bay. But there was smoke and water damage in the passenger compartment. The insurance adjuster is coming out on Wednesday to estimate the cost. Has anyone had experience with this? Beyond the obvious repairs of the wiring, hoses and paint; what other repairs should I be expecting?

Depends on how hot for how long. If steel gets real hot it can become fragile and aluminum can warp or melt altogether.

I pulled a steel 4barrel intake off of a 289 that had a pretty serious engine fire but it looked ok. When I went to install it on another engine and torqued down on the bolt behind #8 I heard a very distinct, "TINK". It cracked. I figure it must have gotten hotter than hell for a while to do that.

Engine, radiator, shocks, tires, front wheel bearings and spindles, alternator, power steering, brakes and brake components, Hood, wiring, plastic grill and ornamentation to start with.
Hope your daughter is OK, that is the important thing. Cars can always be fixed, people, not so much.

new carburetor because it would have warped from the heat or the cost of a rebuild whch is around $350.00 . . then you can go buy a brand new quick fuel carb from summit for $400.00 if you have a 4 barrel.

new interior because even if it did not get burned, it still has a smell frm the smoke which not only makes the car undriveable but it is also a health risk . . the insurance will likely say they will only pay to clean it but smoke smell can not be cleaned with chemicals, it can only be masked . . the only known way to remove smoke smell is with ozone . . they have to put a big ozone generator in there and roll up the windows and run it for a while . . this is what they did at the pentagon after the the jet crashed into it.

look up prices on national parts depot to make sure you dont get screwed because they are the most expensive

carpet ................... $220.00

carpet insulation ....... $75.00

carpet installation .... $350.00

headliner ................ $ 90.00

windshield rubbers ... $120.00 . . The windows must be removed to install the headliner and the old rubbers are not reuseable.

headliner installation . $600.00
.

Can you give us any pictures? Its hard to tell you what to expect without knowing the full extent of the damage.

About 10 years ago, I had an engine compartment fire. It was just a lot of smoke and not much else (No flames shooting out of the hood). It cost me about $100 for a new wiring harness and a couple hours of elbow grease with the handy spray detailer and couple of rags. I didn't file a claim with my insurance..... but probably could have gotten more stuff done to the car had I done it!

I have seen mustangs catch on fire before (sadly at a car show) where the paint bubbled up and the heat warped the metal. Is this something that this car experienced?
