64.5 to 65 Electrical
I have a 64.5 and would like to install a new full 65 chassis wiring harness. Before everyone gets upset. Yes I know how awesome a 64.5 is. I am a traditionalist and am not crazy about it. However it's been wrecked and not an entirely authentic 64.5. And my desire is to have a safer car to enjoy that can be passed down for years to come. I have been informed that I can install a "painless" brand harness that is very close to "plug & play". But I would need to get a 1 wire alternator, new turn signal switch and horn assembly to go from 64.5 to 65. My question is what other problems will I encounter as far as connections and comparability that are looming. Has anyone done this? Suggestions? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
You're gonna get arguments on this forum regarding AAW, painless, and OE wiring. Simply, each has its advantages and disadvantages, and its a matter of preference and level of comfort with electrical. I just did my 66 with OE, took an entire weekend, and it was a "plug&play" scenario. Comes in three sections; under hood/engine, interior, and trunk, and then misc sections such as alternator, etc. There are small updates to the OE aftermarket wiring; (heater core/emergency flasher), but nothing too difficult to overcome. Wiring diagrams are important to follow and make it easy down the road if you have to isolate or fix wiring issues later. AAW and Painless do not follow factory wiring diagrams or color codes, though they have there own wiring diagrams (if you call em that) and each wire is labeled rather than color coded. OE is pre-terminated and cut to length, the others require you to cut and terminate the ends yourself, another advantage to OE.
