Default Leaf spring shackles

Do you need to run rear leaf spring shackles? I hate the way that they look. What is the purpose?

Yes. Leafs elongate during compression and shorten during droop, shackles allow for this change in length.

My leaf springs are mounted in the stock location. I have seen people run (what I assume are aftermarket shackles) and they are visible from behind the car.

People use to use, and apparently still do, aftermarket shackles when trying to get more of a rake to the car or if their leaf springs had collapsed to the point of uselessness.
