Default V6 to V8 motor mount difference.

Hello.
I am in the middle of completing a project 66 coup that someone else began. I currently have the motor and trans out, and noticed that the motor mount holes in the body have been re-drilled about 2-1/2 inches higher on the body post, and these are the holes being used. I noticed before removing the motor that in this position there is about an inch of clearance between the rack and pinion and the oil pan. The oil pan does not appear to be oversized. So I'm figuring that this is the reason someone raised the motor height. I know that the car came with a straight six in it, and the current motor is a 302. To further complicate, the reason the motor and trans are out of the car is because I am converting from a T5 manual to an AOD.

The car has not yet been on the road, and I am concerned about the drive line angle after I get everything back together.

Did V8 cars of this year have the mount holes positioned higher, such as where the news holes have been drilled? Should I be using a different motor mount and using the original holes? Are there motor mounts available that allow for height adjustment?

Any help is appreciated.

Correction to the title: Should read "Straight 6 to V8 motor mount difference".

Sorry.

I know the second gen cars used different mounting locations for big block and small block cars. They changed the holes in the mounts not the frame horns though. I don't know if this relates to your issue but generally, lower is better.

Sounds like the rack and pinion change was the cause of the motor elevation. What about the rear end and the drive line angle? Is the 302 out of an 80's car with fuel injection? Oil pan sump on 60's was in the front of the engine, sump on 80 was in the rear necessitating a change in oil pan and dip stick. I believe engine mounts for original 6 and 8's were the same and in the same location on early Mustangs. A different engine mount was used on Falcons and other FoMoCo cars of that vintage.
