Is the water vacuum switch spring loaded? I pulled the switch and checked. I really felt like it was going to be froze up......but it wasn't. Worked very well. It would hold a vacuum and the stem moved very easy.

Notice how the stem is out (red dash)

With it pushed in.

I should be able to tell if its ( The shut-off valve) is leaking bye if the hoses are hot I would think?
Barnett.....you are right, the hoses need to be replaced. Thats in the near future.

Thanks,
Hump.

Also.....is the vacuum switch suppose to be connected some how with the cable arm?
Or does it come off like in the pics. Seems like alot of travel of the arm compared to the distance that the pin in the vacuum switch moves. Moving the "warm/cool" lever on the dash....moves the "arm" quite a bit.

Thanks,
Hump

i dont understand your question.

the arm on the cable is not supposed to be attached to the switch . yes the arm is supposed to move a fairly long way . if i recall, it should be around 1 1/2 inches from the switch when it is in the open position . you just need to make it nearly fully depress the switch when the dash lever is moved all the way, so move the dash lever the right direction then move the cable in or out to adjust the arm.

as i mentioned, some clown may have bent your arm, so if you cant adjust it, simply carefully bend the arm so it is in the proper location where it can be adjusted by moving the cable.

yes, the valve in the line is supposed to return on its own after the vacuum is released, so yes it does have a spring.

cant believe that 50 year old thing still works, lol.

So the "vacuum" switch is suppose to be spring loaded.....it is not. I must move it manually to swap positions / open & close it. As seen in the pics above (vacuum switch)...it will not spring back. I'll have to see if I can find one of those cause if it ever moves in, there is no way it will move back out, thus I will have "heat" all the time. That's no good.
As far as the travel of the cable/arm....I think its moving the correct distance. I just concerned that it might need to be connected to the vacuum switch some way.
Thanks,
Hump.

the water valve is spring loaded.

the switch on the heater box is spring loaded . when you push it in then let it go it should spring back . sometimes they get stuck and a drop or two of light oil can free them up.

if you adjusted it the way i said to, it is correct . if you didn't, it is not.

Well i already told you how it works, but if you want to glue it to the switch so it breaks the switch in half when you move the dash switch, you certanly can.

Thanks Barnett.......I'll have to try the oil and see if that will let it operate correctly. Have you ever run across one of these vacuum switches that the spring in-side broke? Heck its only 48 yrs old. :-) Everything else worked as you said.

It's a crying shame when you can't get 50 years out of a switch.
